Symptoms

Vitamin D helps control calcium and phosphate in the body, keeping bones, teeth and muscles healthy. A lack of vitamin D in the UK can cause many symptoms such as tiredness, depression and aches and pains.

Symptoms include:

  • Tiredness
  • Depression
  • Weakness in muscles
  • Pain in bones
  • Deformities in joints (very rare)
  • Rickets (which presents in children as abnormal growth patterns)

When to test

The test can be used to identify Vitamin D deficiency in those with symptoms, and to monitor treatment in those who are taking supplements. Once identified, Vitamin D deficiency can be effectively treated using simple tablets. You will need follow up blood tests to ensure that the treatment is effective.

When to test:

  • If you are experiencing symptoms of vitamin D deficiency (fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, muscle aches, muscle cramps and depression)
  • If you are at risk of vitamin D deficiency, e.g. you spend a lot of time indoors, you don’t get much sun exposure or you are from the Indian Subcontinent or Sub-Saharan Africa
  • If you have received treatment for low vitamin D and would like to monitor your response to treatment
  • If you haven’t received treatment for low vitamin D levels but have been told that they were previously low and would like to measure your current levels
  • 25-hydroxyvitamin D (supply)

One of the Vitamin D biomarkers that has shown the most utility to date is the plasma concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

  • Parathyroid hormone (function)

The plasma concentration of parathyroid hormone is another key Vitamin D biomarker.

  • Rickets (outcome)

The presence or absence of rickets — which can be caused by Vitamin D deficiency in severe cases — is a final biomarker.
