Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory tract infection caused by a new coronavirus – SARS-CoV-2.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Symptoms can vary from mild to severe, and some people may have no symptoms at all.

The main symptoms are:

  • High temperature/fever
  • Cough
  • Smell or taste disturbance

Other symptoms are:

  • Sore throat
  • Runny/blocked nose
  • Muscle pains
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Malaise/tiredness
  • Headache

Less common symptoms are:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Skin rash
  • Conjunctivitis

You can get symptoms at any time from 1 to 14 days after exposure, the majority of people get symptoms at 3–5 days. Some people do not get any symptoms at all.

Who is this test for?

Take this test if you want to know if you have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus:

  • You have recently had symptoms and want to know if this was due to COVID-19
  • You have recently been in contact with somebody suspected or confirmed to have had COVID-19
  • You want to know whether you may have had COVID-19 without realising it (having not experienced any symptoms)

This test should be taken 14 days or more following exposure or onset of symptoms

What does this test detect?

When the body comes into contact with COVID-19, it makes antibodies to fight the infection. This test measures the level of COVID-19 IgG antibodies in the blood so can tell if the body has come into contact with COVID-19.

A negative result means that you have not been infected with COVID-19.

A positive result means that your body has been infected with COVID-19 at some point in the past.

Please note that even if you are positive, it is not known whether you will be immune from catching COVID-19 again. You should continue to follow all public health advice at all times.

When should this test be taken?

It is recommended to wait at least 14 days since you first developed symptoms or were exposed to COVID-19. This is so the body has enough time to make the IgG antibodies that the test measures.

If the test is taken prematurely before the 14 days; then it may result in a negative result even though it should be positive. You may want to repeat the test again if this is the case.

How accurate is this test?

The test is provided by our UKAS accredited laboratory on a CE marked antibody test machine using the Abbott method. The test is 97.5% sensitive and 100% specific.

How does it work?

This test requires a small blood sample. We'll send a private nurse to your house to take your sample. Results are normally available within 2 days of the sample being returned.

Can I have a supervised test?

If you wish our doctors to write a letter or certificate, you will need to have a validated test performed. You will need to book a consultation and perform the test whilst supervised by one of our doctors via a video consultation.
